By its population and size, Kharkiv ranks second in Ukraine's largest cities. It is the country's largest industrial, scientific, and cultural centre. It was established in 1754-1656. It was the capital of Ukraine until the 1930s. The city is home to more than 2 million people. Kharkiv is home to approximately 500 architectural monuments and museums. One of the most striking sights in Kharkiv is the underground railway (subway). Its architectural beauty is second only to that of Moscow. Kharkiv is Ukraine's largest student city. It is home to over 20 higher education institutions. It was established in 1805 as Medical Faculty of Kharkiv University. The Kharkiv National Medical University is home to approximately 1850 international students. They study in the Preparatory Department and Medical and Dental Faculties.
